IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
At our last meeting Dr. David Tisch, a retired periodontist and longtime Rotary member, discussed the progress and challenges in polio eradication.
David is the Foundation Chair for Polio for District 7010.
He highlighted that since 2020, global polio cases have dropped significantly, with 39 cases reported this year, primarily in Afghanistan (9) and Pakistan (30).
The introduction of the nOPV2 vaccine in late 2021 has notably reduced circulating vaccine-derived polio cases.
Tisch emphasized the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates, especially in conflict zones like Afghanistan and Pakistan,
and noted the impact of climate change, particularly floods, on polio spread.
He stressed the need for continued efforts to eliminate the wild polio virus.
