At our last meeting, Dr. Noémie Robert Lajeunesse, a primary care physician, provided Rotarians with an informative overview of the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program. She explained that the movement, which advocates for hope and autonomy for those seeking medical assistance in dying, began with Sue Rodriguez in 1993. While Ms. Rodriguez lost her case for a medically-assisted death in the Supreme Court of Canada, MAiD legislation came into effect in 2016. Dr. Robert Lajeunesse also shared the eligibility and assessment criteria, as well as the procedural safeguards governing MAiD. Most recently, the Government of Canada has paused adding mental health as an eligible condition for MAiD.
