This week, the Sudbury Sunrisers will welcome Gurpreet Singh Broca, who will speak to us about World Day for the Elimination of Racism. Born in India, Broca came to Sudbury in 2015 to study at Cambrian College. He is a director with the India Canada Association of Sudbury, which promotes Indian culture and heritage through a range of educational workshops, cultural celebrations, and public activities. In 2023, Gurpreet received two prestigious awards – an International Alumni of Impact award honouring his dedication to the Sudbury community, during his studies at Cambrian College, and post-graduation with his involvement with the Greater Sudbury Police Services Chief's Diversity Advisory Committee, YMCA and more. Gurpreet was also bestowed with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Award from the Government of Canada, a testament to his outstanding volunteerism and unwavering commitment to inspiring excellence in the Sudbury community. At our last meeting, Sunrisers welcomed long-time Sudbury resident, Mary Lou Hussak, the Executive Director for the United Way/Centraide for North East Ontario. Hussak brings 20-plus years of leadership experience in fundraising, community development, volunteer management, and program delivery in the non-profit and social service sector. Mary Lou provided an overview of the community programs the United Way/Centraide funds, as well as the services United Way/Centraide delivers itself. One such service is ‘211’ or 211.ca where individuals can learn about programs available to them in the community. Remarkably the service is offered in 130 languages! United Way/Centraide provides the foundational building blocks of a good life, including ensuring essential services such as emergency shelter, food, employment, financial sustainability support and training programs when and where they are needed.
